The picturesque promenade at Sunkist Beach set the stage for the first leg of the 2015 Engen Cycle in the City held in Durban on Saturday, 12 September. Cyclists of all standards and ages took to the city street circuit and peddled for their portion of the R75 000 prize money that was up for grabs.
The Street Queens category saw a pleasant turnout from some of the country’s leading ladies in the sport with Lynette Burger crossing the line in first place claiming the Street Queen title for 2015.
The nail-biting end to the Street Kings race; the premier racing category for elite men, saw pro-riders, Nolan Hoffman and Ryan Gibbons, battle it out to lay claim to the crown with Team Abantu’s Nolan Hoffman riding away as the 2015 Street King and Team Europcar’s Ryan Gibbons following closely behind, narrowly missing first place.
“That was too close for comfort. Thank you Cycle in the City for putting on a great show again” said Hoffman via Twitter following his photo-finish sprint against Gibbons.
The Engen Cycle in the City boasted a range of racing categories from Mini-Me’s to Crazy Cranks and categories for the more seasoned cyclist, showcasing the bright future for criterium racing and the greater development of the sport in South Africa.
There was no shortage of entertainment at this year’s Durban event as the spectators were spoiled with live music performances by top South African sensations, Matthew Mole and Gangs of Ballet, a kiddie’s carnival and the gourmet goods on offer.
The following and final Engen Cycle in the City event for 2015 will head to Cape Town on Saturday the 7th of November which will also serve as the Western Province criterium championships.
